Physical therapy is a health discipline that usually accompanies subjects with movement disorders. The role of physical therapy in Cerebral Palsy is dynamic and adjusted to new technical and scientific advances.
What is cerebral palsy? The definition of Cerebral Palsy is a non-specific and broad term with different characteristics and classifications. While opting for the Therapy CP treatment in India, you need to have a decent idea for the same. We know that it occurs due to an immature brain injury and that it occurs in 2-3 children out of 1000, according to the European registry, without showing differences between the sexes. This brain injury is permanent, which means that no treatment cures or eliminates it. Still, currently there are different treatments in the different areas of neuro-rehabilitation that offer us the possibility of therapy to improve the quality of life and the functionality of these children in their day-to-day activities both in the socio-family environment and at school with their classmates. Also, other disorders such as: • Sensory disorders • Perceptual disorders • Cognitive disorders • Communication disorders • Visual and hearing disorders • Urinary incontinence • Epilepsy • Secondary musculoskeletal problems • Pain The classification, according to the nature of movement disorders, is classified as: Spasticity: a velcity-dependent increase in tone at stretching. Ataxia: they lose the balance & coordination of the muscles movement. Dystonia: hypertonia, twisting movement and rigidity during activities. . Athetosis: irregular spasmodic involuntary movements. Motor disorders in the child with Cerebral Palsy can begin to manifest from the month 6 to two years of age when there is a delay in motor development or other difficulties that may be accompanied by other functional disorders or difficulties. In the case of cerebral palsy India, this is why physical therapy is essential. From the field of Physical therapy, the main objective is not to lose functionality in the motor and musculoskeletal aspects through different types of techniques that work to improve motor control, balance, strength, joint stability, and cardio-resistance. Among them, we promote the strengthening and empowerment of the spastic muscle, the reduction of muscle contractions, the reduction of gait, the enhancement of the proprioceptive system, the increase in both selective motor control and postural control, and the improvement of balance with different techniques supported by all them by scientific evidence. Most children affected by Cerebral Palsy (CP) tend to face issues while sleeping. In fact, the problem is so frequent that 1 in every 5 children suffers from a sleep disorder. Cerebral palsy in children has many issues like spasticity, constipation, postural sensation and breathing problems that lead to sleep issues. Beside this biological clock of child is also disturbed because of brain insult itself.
In addition to the above, CP can make children susceptible to spinal deformity such as scoliosis. Some of these children have difficulty in their vision, preventing them from identifying darkness outside. Any of these factors can prevent children from having sound sleep in the night. Here are some tips to help them sleep better: 1. Relaxing routine- Children must have a relaxing routine at night to gradually get into the sleep mode. Too much stimulation, especially on smartphones, can be detrimental to sleep. This routine needs to be consistent and should include dinner and then a warm bath. Brushing teeth, stories, light massage and then lying down would be perfect for the child. Dinner and liquid should be given a minimum 2 hours before sleep to prevent from regurgitation. 2. Taking naps- Certain children are likely to face sleeping disorders in the night due to anxiety and exhaustion. These can be relieved if they take half to one-hour naps in the afternoon, enabling them to have a relaxed sleep at night. 3. Best sleeping position- The best sleeping position is lateral side-lying with one thin pillow between both legs and below the neck. The hand of the child should not be below pillow or head. The hand should be on the front of the chest. The bed should not be too hard too soft but it should be comfortably moderately soft bed. It is better to sleep in the left lateral position but can be on either side and in changing position from side to supine. 4. Follow a healthy diet- Cerebral palsy in children tends to make them face difficulties while swallowing, even choking them at times. Such children have a high chance of not receiving adequate nutrition, thereby leading to low weight and poor growth. 5. Medical problems- Seizures, sleep apnea, and reflux are some of the common problems faced in CP. These problems need to be addressed before commencing treatment. PSG (Polysomnogram) and MSLT (Multiple Sleep Latency Test) can be useful in such cases. 6. Sleeping pills - some children with CP some time need sleeping pills but it should not be used without consulting neurologists/pediatricians. Sometimes sleeping pills are being prescribed along with anti-epileptic medicine. Medicine area also available for correcting biological clocks, these medicines are not habit-forming. A disorder in which individuals are unable to control the muscles of their body is known as Cerebral Palsy (CP). It is linked to the early development of the brain, wherein it is unable to develop normally. A child may develop this disorder in the mother’s womb, during delivery and till 2 year of age. It can be managed with the best cerebral palsy treatment in India.
One of the reasons for CP to occur is due to the genetic disorder. Problems with the new baby’s blueprint may harm its brain’s developmental progress. But there often are other reasons as well: • Drug or alcohol abuse by the pregnant mother • Something preventing blood supply to the baby’s brain within the womb • Infection during pregnancy • Accidental fall that causes injuries to the baby’s brain • Infection causing inflammation near the newborn’s brain • Not enough oxygen for the child’s brain during a difficult pregnancy Where is treatment possible? Treatment for CP can be done at the Trishla Foundation, which is an NGO with health professionals who have been working in this field since 2005. Trishla Foundation and other cerebral palsy treatment centers in India must promote awareness about this disorder and make parents take action at the right time. The complex nature of CP, which involves coordination between motor neurons in the body, makes it challenging to treat, as a result of which there is no permanent cure as of today. However, the underlying damage does not worsen over time, which is definitely a good sign. Through research, cerebral palsy treatment in India can identify specific symptoms and limitations, which, in turn, help improve the standard of life. At the best treatment centers, patients are motivated to use medication, assisting devices, and surgery to manage the condition. There are many therapy programs which are designed as per the goals and abilities of every patient. Parents and other close ones play a massive role in managing this complex condition. |
